An Introduction… William Gedney
08/10/2010We are working with the Duke University, New York, with their Rare book, Manuscript and Special Collections Library on a large project where we looked through the work of American Cult Photographer, WIlliam Gedney.
“From the mid 1950s through the early 1980s, William Gedney (1932-1989) photographed throughout the United States, in India, and in Europe. From street scenes outside his Brooklyn apartment to the daily chores of unemployed coal miners, from the indolent lifestyle of hippies in Haight-Ashbury to the sacred rituals of Hindu worshippers, Gedney recorded the lives of others with remarkable clarity and poignancy…Subjects include photographs of cross country road trips; rural New York; Manhattan; Brooklyn; rural Kentucky; Hippies in San Francisco; composers; gay rallies and demonstrations; St. Joseph’s School for the Deaf; India; England; Ireland; France; and, a large number of nocturnal pictures.”

His work has been a massive influence for the upcoming season, and these influences will feature heavily in the collection. We are very excited about this collaboration, cannot wait until September when we can really show his work.
